In the early days of synthesis, there were no set standards for how synthesizers should work. Early pioneers even disagreed on whether synthesizers should come with default black and white keyboards, let alone if all synths should have controls like ADSR and cutoff/resonance.
Eventually, Dr. Bob Moog on the east coast would release the minimoog*, forever shaping how musicians and developers designed keyboards. But in California, a man named Donald Buchla came out with a completely different approach, which eventually became known as West Coast synthesis.
West coast synthesis uses a completely different set of nonlinear synthesis techniques, which allows them to create tones and shaped waveforms not possible with east coast synthesis. The downside is how difficult it is to not only program, but to create something playable.
With the B-6 Synth Sample Pack, for the first time ever you can simply play pitched, tuned, and easily accessible tones from a range of West Coast synths on any Nord keyboard.
The Process
• We rented/borrowed a few obscure pieces of gear, and started trying to get blips and beeps out of it that would be usable.
• After a lot of experimentation, we sampled the most inspiring tones and began chopping, tuning, and organizing sounds.
• We carefully added a handful of effects, then built playable samples using Nord keyboard’s sampling architecture.
